Title: Tortall and Other Lands: A Collection of Tales
Author: Tamora Pierce
Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult, Anthology
Published: February 22, 2011
This is a collection of stories some of them had characters from Pierce's previous books. I really liked most of them.
Student of Ostriches: I liked how Kylaia used her time to learn and practice what she had learned.
Elder Brother: I had read this story before. Wild Magic is my favorite series by Pierce. I wondered what had become of the apple tree Numair had changed into a human. The tree's sudden transformation could have been debilitating, but the character handled it well and ended up coming out on top.
The Hidden Girl: This story was a little preachy. The main character lived in a society where all the women wear veils. They are covered so the only things showing are hands, feet and eyes. The main character talks about how liberating that is because it is easier to fade into the crowd. There is no way for anyone to prove you were the one to do something wrong. Despite that in the end she pretended to be something she wasn't so she was able to do what she wanted.
Nawat: Pierce's Trickster books are my least favorite. This may have tainted my opinion of the story. I had a problem with some of the ideas behind this story. I understood where they were coming from, but I still did not really like it.
The Dragon's Tale: Kitten is a fantastic character and in this story we actually know what she was thinking. I liked knowing why she was doing things instead of having the other characters guess, which is what happened in the other stories with her. I also enjoyed how it ended. The solution to the story.
Lost: This was my favorite story in the book. I have always liked stories where there is a character that is smarter than everyone else, but still unaware of how special they are. This story's main character is one of those people.
Mimic: This was a fun story with a moral that I could see actually reading to one of my nieces or nephews.
Huntress: I could see most of this story actually happening and I think that made it even more creepy.
Overall I gave this book 4 stars out of 5.
