Review: City of Bones

Title: City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments #1)

Author: Cassandra Clare

Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult

Published: March 27, 2007

Clary's mother disappeared and she was pulled into a world of supernatural beings while trying to get her back.

I can't decide if I would like the book more or less if I hadn't read The Infernal Devices already. I appreciated the explanations in the other series for terms such as clave, institute and parabatai. City of Bones has a couple of sentences for clarification, but the other series goes into greater detail. I was interested enough in this story to read the next one.

Most of the characters were bland, which made it difficult to form an emotional attachment. There were isolated scenes where one character or another would have a good moment. Then the moment would end and it would be time to move on.

Overall I gave this book 3 stars out of 5.
