Title: The Unbound (The Archived #2)
Author: Victoria Schwab
Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult
Published: January 28, 2014
The story picked up six weeks after book one ended. Mac had been having recurring nightmares about Owen. She began to wonder if they were really nightmares or if they were real. Her everyday life was being affected and then people started disappearing.
There was one character who reminded me of Umbridge from the Harry Potter books and I felt almost the same amount of loathing for both characters. I think the writing must be pretty good for me to dislike a fictional character that much. It is really rather impressive. For awhile I was more interested in the second plot concerning Mac's school than I was about what was happening in the archive, that is until they merged together and the story hit its climax.
There was a new character introduced, Dallas, who became Mac's therapist. I not only liked the character and how she was able to relate to Mac, but I liked the psychological focus throughout this book. Mac had gone through a lot of things in a short amount of time and they were bound to affect her emotionally and psychologically and they did. She was not whole and it showed. I liked how the author didn't just gloss over the effects like most would have, but instead she made it an integral part of the story. It also made what she was going through especially with Owen more creepy. It was interesting seeing things from her parent's perspective. They had no reference for what was happening to her and they were only able to judge things by what they could see. It was perfectly understandable the conclusions they came to even if they were wrong.
Overall I gave this book 4 stars out of 5.
